With the theme “Celebrate the Power of Idea”, Bangladesh Brand Forum is initiating the sixth edition of Communication Summit on September 3rd at Le Meridien Dhaka.\u00a0Communication Summit is a platform\u00a0for peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing, bringing together leading communicators and marketing professionals from companies, agencies, associations, NGOs and institutions to network and discuss ideas on the most cutting-edge tools and strategies in the field. Communication Summit 2016 is powered by The Daily Star and initiated in association with Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alike every year, 10 students can attend the summit for free of cost by participating in a case competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the case is on Municipal Solid Waste management and the challenge is to come up with a creative and sustainable solution. Find the case below and the instructions at the end of this page.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Being the ninth most populated country\u00a0and\u00a0twelfth most densely populated country\u00a0in the world, Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing and developing countries in the world now. With this population growth, there is an increasing problem of\u00a0waste management, particularly in the larger cities. Dhaka was reported the 23rd most polluted city in the world in 2014 by WHO and one of the issues concerned is the management of municipal solid waste (MSW).<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The major constraints of proper MSW management are rapid growth of industries, inadequate financial resource, insufficiency of trained manpower and technology and the absence of awareness among the dwellers of the city.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The core demands for the city residents are a healthy environment and clean surroundings; but due to limited financial capacity and other problems, it has been close to impossible nowadays for the municipality to ensure proper solid waste collection and disposal services for the entire population. The city is full of open drains that remain clogged and piles of garbage that rot on the roads. Household garbage is also dumped at authorized and unauthorized open spots at different locations. If the MSW was efficiently managed, it could have been an opulent source of biogas for the country. Hong Kong, Singapore and other Asian countries are setting examples for us by managing their MSW commendably: planting infrastructure for turning all the waste to energy, using incinerators and biogas plants.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the lack of systematic and sustained management system, the Dhaka City Corporation has been trying their best to solve this problem. DCC cleaners sweep roads and drains daily, accumulate wastes from the roadside and transfer them to the nearest dustbins\/containers. Then DCC trucks dump all the accumulated wastes to the dumping sites. There have been quite a number of landfill sites around the city. 6 of these landfill sites are already abandoned – Kulsi, Chalkbari, Gabtoli, Lalbag, Mugdapara, Jatrabari. The Matuail and Aminbazar landfill sites are currently in use.<\/span><\/em><\/span>
\n Some international and non-government organizations are also involved in our MSW management, as JICA, BRAC, Clean up Dhaka by students of Asia Pacific University Japan etc.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Most other countries are managing their MSW to their benefit, while Dhaka has been struggling with the daily accumulating piles of solid waste which has made us face not only with a problem of space constraint but also with a serious health hazard. The situation in the city is far from ideal. It is, therefore, felt that the absence of waste management is posing a serious threat; and it is now an absolute necessity to deal with it expeditiously.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Your task is to design a 3 year long campaign to raise awareness and motivate the people of Dhaka for contributing and to establish Dhaka as a better living place, within a budget of BDT 5,00,00,000. Include the steps and measures that can be taken by the government. Your campaign can accommodate ideas for awareness events, activations, ideas for print media advertisements and social media campaigns to enlighten the importance of the project. You can reach your different target groups with different strategies but come up with one attention grabbing slogan for the entire campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ONLY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE COMPETITION<\/span><\/p>\n

Submit your campaign idea on PowerPoint within 10 slides to commsummit.bbf@gmail.com by 4.00 PM, 30th<\/sup> August 2016, mentioning “MSW Management Campaign Idea” in the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Also share your full name, scanned copy of your student ID card, department, name of University\/educational institution, and contact information for further process of winner selection.<\/span><\/p>\n

10 best ideas will be selected by the Bangladesh Brand Forum authority and the result will be announced on 1st September.\u00a0Decision of the Bangladesh Brand Forum authority in selecting the winners will be considered final. <\/span><\/p>\n
